Breast Implant Care

Summary:

Breast implants are used for both reconstructive and cosmetic purposes, restoring or enhancing breast shape. Long-term monitoring and awareness are essential for maintaining results, identifying complications early, and ensuring optimal outcomes.

Understanding Breast Implants

Breast implants have a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or saline solution. They may be used for:

  • Reconstruction after mastectomy

  • Cosmetic augmentation for symmetry or volume

  • Revision surgery following previous procedures

Implants can be positioned above or beneath the chest muscle, depending on anatomy and clinical goals. When attending follow-up visits, bring your implant card. Details such as type, brand, size, and serial number are important for accurate documentation and assessment.

Ongoing Implant Care

Good long-term results depend on regular review and self-monitoring:

  • Perform self-checks for changes in size, shape, or firmness.

  • Arrange ultrasound or MRI scans every few years to assess implant integrity.

  • Attend scheduled surgical follow-ups for clinical examination and imaging review.

  • Wear a supportive bra to minimise tissue strain and maintain shape.

Possible Complications

While most implants perform well long-term, potential complications include:

  • Capsular contracture (tightening of scar tissue)

  • Implant rupture or leakage

  • Changes in breast shape or asymmetry

  • Infection or inflammation (rare)

  • Breast Implant Illness (BII): symptoms such as fatigue, muscle aches, brain fog, or rashes, which may improve after implant removal

  • Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL): a very rare complication linked to certain textured implants

Modern surgical techniques and high-quality implants help reduce these risks.

When to Consider Further Surgery

Revision or removal may be appropriate if there is:

  • Pain, hardness, or visible implant distortion

  • Capsular contracture or confirmed rupture

  • Persistent infection or inflammation

  • Unexplained systemic symptoms such as fatigue or joint pain

Treatment options include:

Each approach is selected based on clinical findings, breast anatomy, and patient preference.
